Weston-super-Mare gets new hot air balloon festival
On Saturday, November 17, Weston-Super-Mare will see its first ever balloon festival take place on its beach.
This follows a previous first for the town earlier in the year, when Longleat’s lion-themed Simbaloo became the first hot air balloon to ever launch from the resort’s beach.
Exclusive Ballooning, which organised Longleat’s spectacular Sky Safari earlier in the year, has teamed up with North Somerset Council to bring the new event to Weston-super-Mare. Andrew Holly, a director at Exclusive Ballooning, is himself an accomplished balloonist. As well as winning the British championship three times, he has also flown in all 50 US states, a feat that earned him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
Nevertheless, despite his 2,200+ hours of balloon flights around the world, he points to an ongoing desire he had to fly from the beach at Weston-super-Mare, having family links with the seaside town. He also said:
“What better way than to bring hot air ballooning to Weston than with a mass ascent taking off from the sand and then the stunning sight of balloons lining the beach for a spectacular choreographed night glow.”
The event will feature up to 30 hot air balloons participating in a mass ascent from the beach, weather permitting, and a night glow event on the beach set to music. The event will also feature other family-friendly entertainment and a variety of food stalls. Parking will be available for visitors on the beach lawns for £5 for the day.
