Hot air balloon proposal all hot air
Popular film and TV actor Stephen Tompkinson has laughed off rumours that he has married his girlfriend in Las Vegas after proposing to her during a hot air balloon flight.
At the moment, Stephen, who has starred in several TV series over the last 20 years, including; Wild at Heart, Ballykissangel and Drop the Dead Donkey, is shooting the final scenes for a new British film being filmed in Newcastle.
A gritty police drama set in the 1970s, Tompkinson plays Barry Harrigan on a set constructed in the Swan Hunter shipyard, which he says brought back fond memories of his childhood in Stockton-on-Tees.
Backed by Robbie Elliott, one of Newcastle United’s stars, North East filmmakers TallTree Pictures, who only began in 2009, are producing the film which recounts the experiences of 72 year old former detective Arthur McKenzie.
Stephen Tompkinson is no stranger to hot air balloons, filming a documentary for ITV1 in 2009 called ‘Stephen Tompkinson’s Great African Balloon Adventure’, charting his flight from Tanzania to Namibia. A second hot air balloon flight, this time called ‘Stephen Tompkinson’s Australian Adventure’, was screened in three parts in 2010, with a possible third hot air balloon flight across either Asia or South America being considered during 2012.
As for Stephen Tompkinson becoming engaged? Having recently moved to Surrey with his diplomat girlfriend Elaine Young, after living in Australia while filming his balloon adventure, he says it’s on the cards, once he can pluck up the courage to pop the question!
