Cappadocia to host first hot air balloon festival
For the first time in its history, the Cappadocia region of Turkey, a popular tourist destination, is set host a hot air balloon festival.
The Cappadocia International Hot Air Balloon Festival is being arranged by the Ürgüp Municipality, which lies within the Nevşehir province. The event is scheduled to take place from July 3 to July 7.
Some 150 balloons that currently provide hot air balloon rides in the region will attend the event and participate in six flights. In addition, there will be a further 20 balloons, many of them featuring novel shapes, from European countries like the UK, Slovakia, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Some will even be coming from as far away as Mexico, the United States, Japan, and Indonesia.
The event will be launched with demonstrations from Georgian folk dancing groups. The event will also include a nightglow event, a much-loved feature of hot air balloon festivals, where hot air balloons will be lit up in time to accompanying music.
The historic Cappadocia region is often compared to being on another planet, giving tourists a unique travel experience thanks to its lofty boulders and honeycombed hills. The region features soft stone that has led to its inhabitants carving out dwellings and other structures within the hills, leading to a variety of cavern architecture within the region.
Those looking to attend the hot air balloon festival may also want to consider staying in one of the region’s cave hotels for a novel experience.
