A terminal cancer patient who had always yearned for a Hot Air Balloon flights in hot air balloon ride balloon rides hot air balloon ride had his wish come true.

Using a virtual reality (VR) headset, Wayne Knight, 60, had the experience of a lifetime when his palliative care team organised the treat for him from the comfort of his own home.

Due to the nature of his illness – Knight is suffering from incurable kidney and lung cancer – he is unable to leave his North Carolina home. The former healthcare worker believed that he would never have the chance of riding in a balloon as he became increasingly dependent on his oxygen machine, and more and more confined to the indoors.

Nevertheless, his caregivers and chaplaincy service were determined to make his dream of floating in the skies come true.

Once set up with the headset, and from the comfort of his favourite armchair, Knight was suddenly up in a balloon, seeing and feeling the emotions he imagined he would encounter in the same way he would if the journey was a reality.

Wayne’s mother, brother and his care team were all present to see him fully embrace technology to complete one of his bucket list wishes. Up until then, Knight had never used a VR headset before.

Social worker Debbie Garner, a member of Knight’s care team, said about the event:

“It’s a very humbling experience to be able to see Wayne achieve his goal of riding on a Hot Air Balloon flights in hot air balloon balloon rides hot air balloon.”
